The Robert M. Merryman Center will offer an opportunity for area dance students, 12 years of age and older, to participate in a free masterclass with cast members of Chicago- based Luna Negra Dance Theater on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:15 until 8:45 at the Merryman Center at 225 West 22nd Street in Kearney.
The Luna Negra Dance Theatre company will perform at the Merryman Center on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. Prospective students need to contact the Merryman Center to reserve a place in the class. The class will be limited to 30 participants.
Masterclass students will be privileged to work with award-winning teachers. All the company dancers are classically trained. For example company member, Elise Drew, from Oxford Connecticut, received her dance training at American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Hispanico of New York and Perry Mansfield before graduating Cum Laude from the Ailey/Fordham BFA Program in Dance. Other company members have extensive training abroad in places like Puerto Rico, Hong Kong and Spain.
Luna Negra's distinctive style blends the discipline of ballet with the dynamic movements of contemporary dance, infused with the explosive energy of Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance forms. Luna Negra makes its home in Chicago at the Harris Theatre and performs regularly at Ravinia. The company also tours nationally and internationally.
